Four hotels

Ice Hotels

Four northern properties make up this section. Three of them stand through the whole year, and where a building is seasonal, or where sleeping happens somewhere other than the ice structure, the entry says so in its first lines. Snow and ice work is renewed constantly, so treat every description as a snapshot.

Icehotel 365

Jukkasjärvi, Sweden

Icehotel 365 is the year-round building at Jukkasjärvi, kept frozen through the summer by solar-powered cooling. The seasonal Icehotel, rebuilt each winter from river ice and snow, is a separate structure standing on the same site. Both are run by the same operator.

Jukkasjärvi is a village on the Torne river in Swedish Lapland, east of Kiruna and inside the Arctic Circle. Kiruna airport and the railway are the usual approaches, followed by a short road transfer. Warm reception buildings stand between the car park and the cold halls.

Inside, art suites are carved from ice and snow by invited artists, and each is finished differently. Corridors stay cold throughout, and beds carry reindeer hides and sleeping bags. Warm rooms, bathrooms and a restaurant are housed separately, so guests move between temperatures during a stay.

Cold accommodation is normally taken for part of a stay, with warm rooms for the rest. Suites change as they are carved and replaced. Confirm which building your booking refers to, and what clothing is provided rather than brought.

Arctic Bath

Harads, Sweden

Arctic Bath is a hotel and bathhouse on the Lule river at Harads. The main structure floats on the water in summer and sits frozen into the ice in winter, while the sleeping cabins stand separately, some on the water and some on the bank.

Harads is a village in Norrbotten, north of Luleå and south of Gällivare, reached by road along the river valley. Forest and water surround the site, and the neighbouring Treehotel is close by. A boardwalk leads from the land out to the floating structure.

The floating building is ring-shaped, built from timber and stacked logs, with an open cold bath at its centre. Saunas, changing rooms and a treatment area sit around the ring. Cabins are compact, glazed towards the water, and finished inside in pale wood.

Bathing is part of the stay and follows set sessions rather than open access. Ice conditions change what can be reached on foot at different times of year. Ask about session times, about transfers from Luleå, and about which cabins stand on the water.

Aurora Ice Museum at Chena Hot Springs Resort

Chena Hot Springs, Alaska, United States

The Aurora Ice Museum is a year-round ice structure at Chena Hot Springs Resort, kept frozen by the resort's own cooling plant. It is toured rather than slept in: guests stay in the resort's ordinary lodging, and the museum is visited from there during the day or evening.

Chena Hot Springs lies at the end of Chena Hot Springs Road, northeast of Fairbanks in interior Alaska. The drive runs along the Chena river through forest, and the resort is the only settlement at the road's end. Parking and reception sit together at the centre of the site.

The building holds carved ice: columns, a bar, seating and figures cut by sculptors, with coloured lighting through the halls. Coats are issued at the door because the interior stays below freezing. Elsewhere on the site are the hot springs pools, the greenhouses and the geothermal plant.

Tours run to a timetable and are booked separately from a room. Carvings are renewed and change over time. The road can be affected by winter weather, so allow for the drive from Fairbanks and confirm tour times with the resort before setting out.

Levin Iglut Golden Crown

Levi, Finland

Levin Iglut Golden Crown is one of the operator's sites at Levi, and it stands apart from the operator's other igloo location. Guests stay in glass-roofed igloos set along a hillside, with a restaurant and reception building serving the site from above.

Levi is a fell resort in Kittilä, Finnish Lapland, north of the Arctic Circle and close to Kittilä airport. The igloos stand on the slope of Levi fell, above the village and its ski runs, facing open country to the north across the valley.

Each igloo has a glazed roof over the bed so the sky stays in view, with a solid rear section holding a bathroom and a small kitchen area. Units are spaced along the hillside for privacy, reached by a service road. The restaurant building sits at the top.

Sky conditions cannot be promised, and cloud is common through the season. The road up the fell is steep, and transfers are arranged rather than assumed. Ask which of the operator's sites your booking names, and what heating, catering and transfer arrangements are included.

About this page

Blue Resort Group is an independent guide. Ice and snow buildings are rebuilt, recarved and closed for maintenance, so open sources fall behind quickly. This site is not connected to any operator, sells nothing and takes no bookings. Ask the operator which building your booking names and what is standing when you plan to travel.
